Circular Margate
Pilot Programs
Pilot #1
In 2023, Bon Volks worked with Turner Contemporary and The Studio Workshop to deconstruct a large exhibition wall, which formed part of their Sonya Boyce exhibition.
The wall construction was designed by The Studio Workshop to be made in such a way that deconstruction was straight forward. Once deconstructed, the components were made available to local organisations through an Open Call, for projects that would exhibit community benefit.
Circular Margate's inaugural project aimed to tackle the material waste endemic to large cultural organizations like Turner Contemporary. These institutions typically host three to four major exhibitions annually, each with unique material needs. A gallery might be completely rebuilt for one exhibition, only to be dismantled three months later for the next. This rapid turnover, coupled with limited storage capacity, often leads to significant material disposal, despite a desire to mitigate this: informal networks for material distribution exist adjacent to these institutions, but their effectiveness is limited by time constraints and the casual nature of these arrangements.
Bon Volks thanks Turner Contemporary for its dedication to innovating its working practice and its generosity in facilitating this first pilot.

Pilot #2
Circular Margate is a project conceived by Bon Volks to redirect unwanted construction materials to projects of community and social benefit in Margate.
Its aim is to reimagine materials as social assets, through their diversion to community projects and their use in education, skills learning and employment.
The Materials
3”x2” Planed pine timber
Total Volume: 0.11m3
Combined length: 39m
3”x1” Planed pine timber
Total Volume: 0.49m3
Combined length: 323m
12mm Moisture Resistant MDF
Volume: 0.64m3
Combined Length: 54.3m
Combined Width: 31.4m
Where are these materials from?
The materials have been donated by Turner Contemporary.
In their previous life, they were a set of display plinths in the ‘Beyond Form’ exhibition. These plinths were deconstructed, removed and processed by TC and CM.
What is the process of this pilot?
Due to the specific nature of these materials, CM is proposing that organisations apply for the materials and give requirements and CM and BV make the products, ready for use.
Who is this for?
This project is for any not-for-profit organisation that operates with a clear community and social benefit
How to apply
Write a short email to info@bonvolks.com explaining what you require and we will get back to you with a timeframe.
The Possibilities...
The materials could become a coffee table, a stool, some shelving, a book case, a...
… a bookcase
… a wall cube
… a plinth
… a shelf
… a chair
… a stoll
… or something else
NB: The materials have had a previous life. they will be processed and cleaned by the CM crew and the ‘products’ will supplied repaired and sanded down. But it will require the receiving organisations to do a little painting.
